Today was our latest “home visit”—part of the adoption process, wherein a social worker visits your home to make sure that it’s a safe environment for a child. They do this before an adoption (such as our impending adoption of Peanut Butter), as well as (if I recall correctly, shortly after the child comes home and six months later).
It’s really not a terribly big deal, and our social worker, Maureen, is very nice, but there is that whole “theoretically this could cause us real problems if things go badly” thing. It can put you in a mode of “Wait! Is everything clean? Is everything child-proof? Is Elaina going to be sweet or…less sweet?”
Elaina was absolutely charming. She showed Maureen “her computer” (which is really not her computer—it’s one of my old laptops setup on her little table…exclusively for her use…wait a second….). She modeled her Sleeping Beauty costume, showed Maureen her other dress-up clothes, her Barbie dolls, and her Sleeping Beauty doll. She even took Maureen by the hand and gave her a tour of the house.
We really couldn’t have asked for more. She didn’t even mention being locked in a cage, which is just as well.
