This is one of the waterfalls in the lobby of The Polynesian, where we stayed during our trip.
The nice thing about Disney is that there are lots of differently-themed, nice places to stay.
For Heidi and I, the Polynesian theme was the right place. It wasn’t tacky and over-themed, just very lush and natural. We’d talked about The Contemporary, which is very nice too, and on the monorail like The Polynesian is. But we really liked the more natural environment of The Polynesian. When we walked back to our room at night, it was outside, on torch-lit and lantern-lit paths, not through a modern building.
It’s just the third stop on the monorail from Magic Kingdom. There’s a boat launch to Magic Kingdom as well, which is really nice in that you’re out in the open air, seeing the resorts from the water.
Elaina loved the sandy beach and the pool, which has a gently sloped entry like a beach in place of steps on one end. (The volcano water slide was cool too, but as mentioned in an earlier post, not Elaina’s favorite thing about the place.)
The sand was really powdery, soft, white sand, and I don’t know whether it’s a natural or engineered property, but it didn’t really stick to you like other sand. It just sort of brushed off clean. For most of us. Elaina defied that particular property of the sand, managing to come back to the room with sand plastered all over her back inside her swimsuit. (But not everyone makes sand angels at the beach.)
We were able to watch the fireworks from the beach. They weren’t super close-up, but they were still fairly cool, even from across the lagoon. Elaina was too enthralled with the sand to pay much attention. I’d pictured us on the beach, watching the fireworks, with Elaina in awe of the scene, but she has her own priorities. In the end, I guess it’s kind of a cool picture—a little girl in the foreground, totally absorbed in digging in the sand, while fireworks paint the sky behind her.
